Mental health professionals (inclusive psychologists, therapists, counselors, and psychiatrists) are trained and experienced health care practitioner or community services provider who offer service that are directed towards improving your mental health or providing help for any mental health challenges. They are ethically bound and required to be registered with the ethical body in their state. All of them have a Masters Degree or a Doctorate Degree in their field with minimum of 3 years relevant experience.

Before your first session, make a list of any symptoms you may have had, any major stresses or recent life changes, any medical condition, all medications including vitamins or other supplements, and any question you want to ask.
The first session is usually the assessment session and focused on history, understanding your symptoms and any other areas that would benefit developing a personalized treatment plan. You would be asked various questions and may be required to take some tests. It’s necessary to answer these questions to the best of your knowledge, as this would enable proper diagnosis and/ or management .
No, per se. Your therapist should be able to give you some insights during the first session.
At your appointment, you’ll be encouraged to talk about your feelings and emotions to a trained therapist, who’ll listen and support you without judging or criticizing. The therapist can help you gain a better understanding of your feelings and thought process, and find your own solutions to challenges, but they won’t usually advice or tell you what to do
A minimum number of sessions can only be determined after an assessment and an initial session. Based on the assessments, your therapist should be able to determine if you’ll benefit from a short course therapy or a long course session. The goal is to help you become better in the long run, even when you are no longer in therapy.
Typically sessions ranges from 45 minutes – 60 minutes. It could be longer especially if there is need for further assessment (e.g. personality assessment).
